Presentation Skills Workshop and the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT)

January 13, 2012

2-part workshop: January 11 and 18, 2012

Presentations are a key and regular part of a graduate student and academic career and thus, development of presentation skills is a vital asset for effective communication. This workshop was led by Dr. Cyprien Lomas, Director of The Learning Centre at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. He drew on his background in communication and education to prepare the students for public speaking in a comfortable, informal workshop setting. The following presentation elements were covered:

  • Tips for PowerPoint slides and visuals in general (photos, text, etc.)
  • Use of presentation notes
  • Voice projection and tempo, eye contact
  • Understanding and engaging your audience (technical language, etc.)
  • Putting research into context with a strong introduction and conclusion
  • How to be memorable (in a good way)

Students had the opportunity to share their personal speaking experiences and issues that they wanted to improve upon.

The second half of the workshop involved students practicing a presentation for a campus-wide competition, the 3MT (http://3mt.grad.ubc.ca). This competition is a fun, community building event where graduate students from departments across campus can share and learn about each others’ research. The goal of the 3MT presentation is to explain the breadth and significance of your research to an intelligent but non-specialist audience. This is an effective communication exercise that fits well with the goals of the TerreWEB program.
