“Communicating Science: Best Practices for Visualizations”

 Thursday, February 27th,

 2:00pm – 3:00pm (3:30pm for TW scholars)

 Room MCML 154

 Everyone welcome!

Abstract:

Research continues to show that the general public is less informed about pressing societal issues like climate change, energy resources, and human diseases than needed for effective decision-making. Limited public understanding persists despite significant efforts to build literacy through school, university, and informal education. This talk will explore ongoing research into scientific visualization, including recommendations for new investigations and changing practice for visual communication of science.

I am an Associate Professor at Michigan State University, Director of the Geocognition Research Lab in the Department of Geological Sciences, and Director for Educational Research for the Center for Integrative Studies in General Science. I am also affiliated with the MSU’s Cognitive Science Program and Environmental Science and Policy Program. Currently, my research focuses on cognition, assessment, and visualization, including the nature of expertise, and includes collaborative research on concept inventories, visualization, and climate change cognition.
