TerreWEB Workshop: Heather Galindo (COMPASS)

November 10, 2014

Heather Galindo, COMPASS

Making Your Science Relevant

 Thursday, November 20th

 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

 Room MCML 258

 Everyone welcome!

In this short, hands-on workshop you will learn to distill your research down to its core elements and talk about it in clear, lively terms. Starting with a tool called the Message Box, you will develop the basic ingredients that you can use to create a 30-second elevator speech of what you do and why it matters, along with the elements you need you turn a mere description into a compelling story. Come ready to roll up your sleeves and up your communication game based on feedback from your peers!

Heather Galindo is the Assistant Director of Science at COMPASS, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping scientists build the skills and relationships they need to more effectively engage with media, policymakers, and each other. Heather helps connect science and scientists across a diverse range of topics through communication workshops, conference symposia, presentations, peer-reviewed papers, and directly connecting scientists to journalists and policymakers.  Heather came to COMPASS in October 2010 following a postdoctoral position in fisheries genetics at the University of Washington, and received her Ph.D. in biological sciences from Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station with a research emphasis on marine ecology, oceanography, and population genetics.
