I’m a digger in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC. Currently I am pursuing a MSc in soil science, supervised by Dr. Maja Krzic, working to create a Web Based Learning tool to help students learn about the forest floor: how important the organic material on top of the soil really is, and how to identify differences in that material. While most of my work happens on the computer, I take every opportunity to go out and dig a soil pit – especially when it involves sharing the wonderful world of soil with new audiences.

I began my digging career during my BSc degree at Simon Fraser University. I worked with Dr. Margaret Schmidt and her graduate students for two summers looking at the influences of bigleaf maple on soil properties and helping with parent material (that is the type of rock the soil is formed from) maps in the Okanagan and Lower Mainland. When I first took a good look at the colour and texture changes arising from thousands of years of soil processes, it really opened my eyes and got me instantly hooked on digging. I hope to continue to share my love of digging by using innovative teaching methods and talking to anyone who wants to listen about soils!
