Megan C DSC_0720_2I was master’s student in the Resource Management and Environmental Studies (RMES) program. I received my undergraduate degree in Environmental Analysis from Pomona College in Southern California. As a native of Seattle, Washington, a return to the Pacific maritime region was welcome after my time in the sunny south.

My special affinity for wildlife began early in childhood as I shared my home with a constant succession of furry, feathered, or finned friends. My time spent working at a wildlife rehabilitation center combined with my collegiate studies solidified my interest in animal-human interactions.

My current research involves the zoo, a human-animal interface that is rather unique, bringing animals and people together in a way most humans would otherwise never experience. As such, zoos are strategically poised to significantly affect human opinion, actions, and behaviour. Communication in this setting can thus lead to powerful education and meaningful change. My project looks at the effectiveness of conservation in zoos through a species-based evaluation and seeks to identify successes and challenges that individual institutions face. This information is useful not only for the zoos themselves, but for educating and perhaps informing the actions of the general public and the scientific community. TerreWEB’s emphasis on communication within diverse groups fits well into this area and the interdisciplinary approach is most appropriate for this type of investigation.
