Sandra Banholzer (Internship)

In September 2012, Sandra Banholzer began an internship with the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) in Victoria, BC. Sandra worked as an Adaptation Analyst in the Climate Action Secretariat, a subdivision of the BC Ministry of Environment. Part of her duties included conducting a climate change study, “Where in B.C. are human populations most vulnerable to climate change?” She considered not only physical environmental change, but also social vulnerability, which is influenced by age, income and social status. The goal of this project was to develop approaches on how to combine social vulnerability with the physical climate change impact risks. This new perspective provides an in-depth understanding of potential vulnerability of populations, beyond just the physical aspects of risk. Understanding the social vulnerability to climate change is crucial, as it can be used to form the basis for targeted adaptation strategies or other policy interventions. Sandra completed her internship in December.
